Sjogren’s Syndrome

A connective tissue disease affecting the glands and primarily manifest by severely dry eyes and dry mouth. Sjogrens or Sicca may be primary or secondary to another connective tissue disease such as RA or SLE. Treatment is usually symptomatic but frequently includes drugs such as Plaquenil, Salagen, Evoxac and symptomatic treatments with eye drops and Biotene. Advanced cases may be treated with Imuran, Cytoxan, or Rituxan. ANA testing is positive and is characterized by positive SSA and SSB subtesting.
