Fungal Infections
Fungal Infections
Most commonly the fungi responsible of the infections are found in nature and on animals including pets. Moisture and heat may exacerbate this condition. OTC creams and sprays are readily available to treat mild cases. However, infections of the nails and hair require oral medications for sometimes weeks to months. Recurrences are common. Nail disease presents with thickened brittle, white- yellow or green discoloration. There are many causes of “funny looking” nails so correct diagnosis is important prior to initiating treatment with oral agents. Fungal infections may be diagnosed with scraping the skin for a KOH prep and microscopic exam, PCR testing, or by culture.
