Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis “eczema” of childhood presents as dry skin, itching, crusting typically on the folds of elbows and knees, face, and hands. Asthma and allergies may also be associated and require co-management with the allergists. Some children get better with age but there is a prevalence in adults. There are many topical agents that can be used such as cortisone creams, immunomodulators (pimecrolimus and tacrolimus), Eucrisa, and Opezlura. Fortunately, for severe or recalcitrant cases there are systemic agents available some of which have been approved down to 6 months of age. These medications, such as Dupixent, Adbry, Rinvoq, Cibinqo, have change the lives of patients with severe dermatitis and asthma.
